According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday May 22, 2026, Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his 26-man England squad for the 2026 World Cup, with several major exclusions and unexpected inclusions making headlines ahead of the tournament in the United States.

Harry Kane will captain the Three Lions as England continue their quest to win a first World Cup title since 1966. Big names such as Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire were all left out of the squad, while players including Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn and Djed Spence secured places.

Kane will lead the attack with Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney named as his backup strikers. Marcus Rashford also earned a call-up after an impressive loan spell at Barcelona. Anthony Gordon was included after another strong campaign with Newcastle United.

In midfield, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are expected to play central roles. Elliot Anderson was rewarded for his outstanding season at Nottingham Forest. Kobbie Mainoo also made the squad following his breakthrough performances for Manchester United during the second half of the season. Jordan Henderson returned to the national setup alongside Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze.

England’s defensive options include John Stones, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa and Dan Burn. Reece James and Tino Livramento will compete for the right-back position. Nico O’Reilly and Djed Spence were selected as options on the left side of defence. Jordan Pickford remains England’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Dean Henderson and James Trafford included as backups.

Tuchel admitted the selection process was difficult because many players deserved consideration. The German coach explained that balance, form and positional needs influenced his final decisions. He also praised the hunger and energy shown by younger members of the squad.

England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17. They will then face Ghana on June 23 before concluding the group stage against Panama on June 27.
