According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing severe internal friction following its recently concluded governorship and National Assembly primaries.
Dissatisfaction over the election outcomes has triggered a wave of high-profile defections, legal threats, and internal revolts, threatening the ruling party’s unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Data from the primaries held between May 16 and 18 reveals that 54 serving federal lawmakers failed to secure their return tickets.
Among the prominent casualties are ranking senators like Gbenga Daniel, Danjuma Goje, Ned Nwoko, and former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege. Infuriated by the outcomes, Omo-Agege has defected to the newly formed National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Similarly, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, and former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, have left the party.
The friction has hit Lagos State deeply, exposing cracks within the state’s progressive fold. Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of the president and Iyaloja-General, has openly threatened protests over alleged manipulation of results.
Local stakeholders warn that ignoring grassroots choices could mirror past electoral setbacks. Meanwhile, the Alimosho Synergy Group has rejected the state’s published results, urging members to wait for Abuja’s intervention.
Legal battles are also mounting. In Zamfara State, Dr. Sani Shinkafi filed a lawsuit challenging the consensus candidate for Zamfara North, while Ned Nwoko rejected the Delta North results, labeling the process fraudulent. Similar petitions over irregularities have emerged from Kogi, Plateau, and Benue states.
While Kwara APC Chairman Sunday Fagbemi dismissed the defection threats as empty rhetoric from bad sportsmen, the scale of the anger suggests the ruling party faces a monumental task in stabilizing its house before the 2027 polls.
