A retired security operative, Dennis Amachree, has shared an account of the circumstances surrounding the death of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, claiming that a female pharmacist was with the late military ruler shortly before his death in 1998.
According to a report published by The Nation on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Amachree said the woman made the disclosure during an interrogation conducted as part of an investigation into the sudden death of Abacha at the Aso Villa in Abuja.
At the time of Abacha’s death, Amachree was serving as Assistant Director of Operations and Intelligence at the Lagos State Command of the State Security Service (SSS). He said security officials sought to determine what had happened to the military ruler and subsequently traced the pharmacist, who had reportedly left Abuja shortly after the incident.
In his newly published 348-page memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, Amachree described how he became involved in the investigation. He stated that the pharmacist allegedly travelled to Lagos on the next available flight after Abacha’s death.

Acting on the instruction, Amachree said his team eventually found the pharmacist in Ogudu, Lagos, and took her to his office. He personally conducted the interrogation, during which, according to his account, she explained what had allegedly occurred at the Aso Villa.
Amachree revisited the episode in Chapter 17 of his memoir, titled The Months of Death: A Turning Point in Nigerian History. He said that after hearing the woman’s account, he contacted the Director of Operations in Abuja, after which she was promptly taken back to the Federal Capital Territory.
The former security official maintained that his version of events was based on information he obtained and experiences from his official responsibilities during that period. He argued that accounts that contradict his version do not accurately represent the events surrounding Abacha’s death.
He stated: “Any other narrative is an act of deceit and a disservice to our countrymen and women.”
Amachree also recalled the statement he said the pharmacist made at the beginning of the interrogation:
“I did not kill him, he died on top of me.”
According to Amachree, the pharmacist subsequently provided a detailed account of the events, prompting him to contact his superior in Abuja and arrange for her immediate return to the Federal Capital Territory.
General Sani Abacha governed Nigeria as a military ruler from November 1993 until his death in June 1998. He was 54 years old when he died at the Aso Villa in Abuja.
