According to a report by Daily Trust on Sunday, May 31, 2026, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has stated that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will serve as an equal partner in government if they emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the declaration while officially presenting Kwankwaso as his running mate during the party’s national convention held in Abuja.
The event attracted party members, delegates, and supporters from different parts of the country as the NDC formally launched its presidential ticket ahead of the next general election.
Speaking at the convention, Obi emphasized that the partnership between him and Kwankwaso would be based on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to governance.
He said both leaders had agreed to work together in a manner that would ensure effective leadership and national development.
According to him, the administration they hope to form would place a strong emphasis on teamwork and collective decision-making rather than concentrating authority in a single office.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate, who contested the 2023 presidential election, explained that his vision for governance is rooted in consultation and inclusiveness.
He maintained that every key stakeholder in government would be given the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to policy formulation and implementation.
Obi stressed that the success of any administration depends largely on the willingness of its leaders to work together toward common objectives.
He further stated that the office of the vice president under an NDC-led administration would play a significant role in governance and national affairs.
According to him, the position would not be treated as a ceremonial office or one that exists only in name.
Instead, it would be entrusted with important responsibilities that would enable the occupant to make meaningful contributions to the running of the country.
He said, “The government we intend to form will no longer be a government where anybody will say that the vice president is a spare tyre.”
