Former presidential adviser and political commentator, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the country’s persistent security challenges, arguing that the situation would have had serious political consequences in a more accountable democratic system.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Baba-Ahmed expressed frustration over the continued insecurity affecting many parts of Nigeria.

He pointed to ongoing concerns such as banditry, kidnappings, terrorist attacks, and communal violence, stating that citizens have continued to bear the burden of a security crisis that has lasted for years.

According to him, the inability of successive governments to decisively address insecurity has weakened public confidence and raised questions about leadership and accountability.

He argued that security remains one of the most important responsibilities of any government and that leaders should be judged largely on their ability to protect lives and property.

Baba-Ahmed maintained that in countries with stronger democratic traditions, poor performance in such a critical area would likely lead to significant political consequences for those in power. He suggested that Nigerian leaders should be held to similar standards of accountability.

During the interview, he stated, “What else is there? In a civilized democracy, President Tinubu’s record on insecurity would have cost him his seat a long time ago.”
