BREAKING: ‘Being at the Table Isn’t Expensive for Nigeria, But It Requires Insight’ — Obasanjo

According to a report published by ThisDay Live on Monday, April 27, 2026, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo stated that any government that fails to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens has no justification for remaining in office.

Obasanjo made the remarks while addressing the growing security challenges and leadership concerns confronting Nigeria. He argued that the country’s current situation points to a deep governance failure that has continued to undermine national stability and weaken public trust in government institutions.

The former president blamed the worsening insecurity on what he described as long-standing weaknesses in leadership. According to him, Nigeria has struggled to effectively manage its domestic affairs, resulting in increased instability in several parts of the country.

He also expressed concern over the impact these internal problems have had on Nigeria’s international reputation. Obasanjo noted that the nation’s influence in regional and global matters has diminished, reducing its ability to contribute meaningfully to major international discussions.

Speaking further, he referenced the role of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stating that Nigeria’s influence within the regional bloc has declined over time. He explained that although the organization once relied heavily on Nigeria’s leadership, the country no longer holds the same commanding position it previously enjoyed. According to him, this change reflects broader shortcomings in Nigeria’s foreign policy approach.

Obasanjo added that Nigeria’s voice in global decision-making has also weakened considerably. He observed that the country is increasingly absent from important international platforms where key political and economic decisions are shaped. In his view, this development highlights deeper concerns regarding governance, diplomatic strategy, and leadership effectiveness.

He further argued that Nigeria’s reduced impact on regional and international affairs mirrors the internal weaknesses affecting the nation’s administration and long-term planning. Considering Nigeria’s population and strategic importance, he said the country should naturally play a more influential role globally.

The former president also expressed disappointment that Nigeria’s vast potential remains largely untapped. He stressed that maintaining relevance in international affairs does not necessarily require enormous resources, but rather competent leadership, vision, and strategic engagement.

In his words, “So, when I talk of mishandling, you now see what I was talking about. It doesn’t cost much for Nigeria to be at the table. But it requires understanding. But, honestly, I feel pained. Because I know what Nigeria could do.”
