According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, US Democratic Congressman Ed Case said during a Senate committee hearing that the United States has reportedly lost 39 aircraft since the start of the conflict with Iran on February 28, citing figures published by a US defense media outlet.
Case made the remarks while questioning Pentagon Chief Financial Officer Jay Hurst about the reported scale of military losses and the potential financial impact of repairing or replacing damaged aircraft.
“We’ve lost about 39 aircraft, according to a report in The War Zone, and that’s an old one that’s almost one month old,” Case said during the hearing. He also asked whether the Pentagon had calculated “a retention cost on all those aircraft.”
Hurst declined to provide detailed figures during the session but acknowledged that repair and replacement costs were still being assessed.
“There are costs there, sir, but I want to get back to you in writing and what they specifically are, because, as you can imagine, repair of aircraft is something that’s very hard to calculate,” Hurst responded.
“We want to do a full diagnosis of the aircraft before we estimate that cost,” he added.
The report referenced by Case was published by The War Zone and claimed that the US Air Force conducted nearly 13,000 flights during the conflict.
According to the publication, 39 aircraft were reportedly destroyed, while an additional 10 sustained varying degrees of damage during operations linked to the war with Iran.
The report also alleged that an F-35A Lightning II fighter jet was struck inside Iranian airspace and that a Boeing E-3 Sentry aircraft was destroyed.
Regional tensions escalated after the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran against Israel and US allies across the Gulf region. The conflict also contributed to the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
A ceasefire agreement mediated by Pakistan took effect on April 8, although negotiations in Islamabad reportedly failed to secure a permanent settlement. The truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump without a specified end date.
