According to report by Vanguard on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have commenced an investigation into a man identified as John Anoruo, who is suspected of impersonating a legal practitioner and allegedly forging the official seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
According to information released by the anti-graft agency via its official X handle on Tuesday, Anoruo was arrested on Monday, April 20, 2026, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, where he runs a legal and educational consultancy business.
The EFCC explained that the case against him began after he submitted a formal petition on behalf of clients against the management of Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited. The petition, dated September 22, 2025, was initially treated as a routine complaint.
However, further scrutiny of documents linked to the case revealed suspicious irregularities. Investigators discovered that both the original petition and a subsequent withdrawal letter dated March 5, 2026, carried what appeared to be a falsified Nigerian Bar Association seal.
The Commission stated that during interrogation, Anoruo admitted to obtaining the forged seal from an unnamed business centre in Lagos, though he did not provide further details about its source.
Additional findings by investigators also raised doubts about his legal qualifications. The EFCC noted that the 55-year-old claimed to have earned a law degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2018 through part-time or evening studies.
However, he reportedly did not attend the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in Nigeria.
The anti-corruption agency further indicated that Anoruo would face prosecution once ongoing investigations are fully concluded.
It reaffirmed that he will be formally charged in court after all necessary inquiries have been completed.
