Speaking during an interview with Trust TV on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Kwankwaso said political betrayal does not usually end well for those involved, insisting that history has shown that individuals who turn against political movements or allies eventually lose influence.
According to the former governor, Governor Yusuf may not have properly studied past political developments before making his decision. Kwankwaso argued that while some politicians may appear successful immediately after leaving their political base or allies, such success often does not last in the long run.
“I think he made a very big mistake, maybe he did not look at history. No human being anywhere that I know, including in Kano, who would be treacherous and at the same time succeed. You may look like you are succeeding, but at the end of the day you will just crash,” Kwankwaso said during the interview.
The former governor also referenced the political journey of former Kano State governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as an example to support his argument.
Kwankwaso explained that he played a major role in supporting Ganduje’s emergence as governor in the past, but claimed that Ganduje later turned against him and distanced himself from the Kwankwasiyya Movement after assuming office.
According to Kwankwaso, the political influence and relevance of Ganduje have since declined, which he believes demonstrates the consequences of political disloyalty.
“If anybody is in doubt they should look at the situation of Ganduje,” he added.
The remarks have generated reactions within political circles in Kano State and across social media, with supporters of different political camps debating the future of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the evolving political alignments ahead of future elections.
Political analysts believe the comments further reflect ongoing tensions within Kano politics, especially among influential figures whose relationships have changed significantly over the years due to shifting political interests and alliances.
