According to a report by TheCable on Monday, May 18, 2026, Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State on Monday participated in the All Progressives Congress senatorial primary for Kogi Central, where he publicly showed support for former governor Yahaya Bello, who is seeking the party’s Senate ticket for the 2027 elections.
A viral video from the venue captured Ododo standing in the voting queue alongside delegates and holding his ballot slip as the exercise progressed amid chants from supporters backing Bello.
Bello, a former two-term governor of Kogi State and former presidential aspirant of the APC, is contesting the Kogi Central senatorial seat despite facing an ongoing trial in Abuja over alleged financial misconduct.
After casting his vote, Ododo said the exercise reflected internal democracy within the party and that consultations had helped streamline the number of aspirants for a peaceful primary.
The political relationship between Ododo and Bello has remained strong, with Bello widely regarded as the governor’s political mentor in the state’s power structure.
In a related development, the APC national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, announced that the party’s screening committees had cleared and disqualified aspirants across several states in line with its guidelines.
Morka disclosed that some candidates were initially barred from participating in the primaries, including serving senators Benson Agadaga, Garba Maidoki and Ipalibo Banigo, as well as former senators Ben Murray-Bruce and Usman Wowo, before the list was later revised and reduced.
The party said the adjustments followed internal review processes aimed at ensuring compliance with its electoral procedures.
