According to a Monday 18 of May 2026 report by The Jerusalem Post, Iran has officially launched the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a new body tasked with regulating vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global shipping route linking the Persian Gulf to international waters.
The announcement was made through official Iranian X accounts which introduced the authority’s social media page and said it would provide “real-time updates on the #Hormuz_Strait operations and latest developments.”
The creation of the authority signals Tehran’s latest effort to formalize its oversight of maritime activity in the narrow waterway, which remains a key corridor for global oil exports and commercial shipping.
Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, had previewed the initiative on Saturday. He said the new institution would deliver “specialized services” to vessels transiting the strait in exchange for fees.
According to Israeli maritime intelligence and risk management firm Windward, ships intending to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will now be required to submit detailed operational information before obtaining transit approval.
The required disclosures include vessel ownership records, insurance documentation, crew manifests, and cargo details. Clearance permits will only be issued after authorities review the submitted information.
Windward also reported that the authority’s guidelines impose new restrictions on certain vessels. Israeli-linked ships are barred entirely from using the route, while vessels associated with the United States face tighter operational limitations.
Iranian officials said the rules are aimed at strengthening control over maritime traffic and limiting activities they consider hostile to national security.
The new regulations also prohibit the passage of what Iranian officials describe as “enemy” military equipment through the strait.
Iran’s First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, quoted by Al Jazeera, defended the move by saying previous transit policies had undermined the country’s authority over the strategic passage.
“We had given up our right of sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, and we previously allowed the passage of military equipment that was intended to be used against us through the Strait of Hormuz. We will not permit that again,” he said.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through its waters.
