Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has reflected on Nigeria’s history and the lessons from the Nigerian Civil War, stating that he personally witnessed the events that led to the conflict as well as the reconciliation efforts that followed after the war ended.
Speaking in a video shared by SYMFONI TV, Baba-Ahmed said he has lived through some of the country’s most significant historical moments and has watched Nigeria evolve from a nation filled with promise to one facing serious political and economic challenges.
The elder statesman explained that at the age of 72, he remembers clearly how the country confronted major national crises, including the Civil War fought between 1967 and 1970.
According to him, he witnessed not only the beginning of the war and how it was prosecuted, but also the healing process that followed when the conflict ended.
Baba-Ahmed praised the reconciliation efforts that took place after the war, describing them as an “incredible method of healing” that helped the country move forward despite the deep divisions caused by the conflict.
In his words, “I am 72 now, I grew up in a great country that met every challenge and dealt with it. I was old enough to see the genesis of the Civil War, the entire execution of the war and the incredible method of healing that took place immediately after it.”
He added, “There was a country that had confidence in itself, leadership that understood the burden of leadership and citizens who believed that tomorrow would be better than today.”
Baba-Ahmed continued, “I saw a great country with a great promise and I saw waste, abuse and decline that I would have sworn 20 years ago was impossible.”
The PRP chairman said his experiences over the decades have given him a broad perspective on the country’s development and the gradual decline of institutions and governance standards.
According to him, Nigeria once possessed enormous potential and demonstrated the capacity to overcome difficult national problems, but years of poor leadership, waste, and abuse of public resources weakened the country.
He stressed that the country’s present challenges should serve as a warning to leaders and citizens alike about the consequences of failing to protect institutions and uphold accountability in governance.
Baba-Ahmed’s comments come at a time when conversations about national unity, governance, and restructuring continue to dominate public discourse in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafra War, remains one of the most defining events in the country’s history. The conflict began in 1967 following political tensions and the attempted secession of the Eastern Region as the Republic of Biafra.
