Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation during the administration of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is afraid of losing the 2027 presidential election. He suggested that this fear may be one of the reasons the administration does not want opposition parties to present a strong presidential candidate.
Speaking during an interview with a correspondent of Channels Television on Morning Brief, Amaechi was asked whether he believes the President is concerned about the opposition. This followed Tinubu’s statement during a meeting with Renewed Hope Ambassadors, where he said opposition members cannot intimidate him ahead of the 2027 election.
Responding, Amaechi said, “If Tinubu is confident he would win the election in 2027, tell him to instruct Nuhu Ribadu, his National Security Adviser, to leave the judiciary and INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) alone. Why use federal institutions against the ADC?”
When asked if he meant that the National Security Adviser was intimidating the judiciary and INEC—an allegation described as serious—Amaechi replied, “I will not explain it. If you don’t have eyes, leave it. Even Nuhu knows that. If they believe they are capable of winning the election, they should leave INEC and the judiciary alone.”
