According to a report published by TheCable on Friday, April 3, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed its commitment to following court rulings in the ongoing leadership dispute within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The dispute, involving factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala, has been the subject of legal challenges, with the courts tasked to determine the legitimate leadership.
Following a recent appellate court decision, INEC announced that it would no longer recognize either faction, emphasizing that any actions must fully comply with judicial instructions.
ADC national publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi indicated that the party intends to continue with its scheduled congresses and convention, regardless of INEC’s position, signaling the faction’s readiness to act independently of the commission.
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan explained that the commission’s role as a defendant in the ongoing litigation limits its ability to take unilateral decisions, making strict adherence to court directives essential.
He highlighted previous experiences in Zamfara and Plateau states, where ignoring judicial rulings during party primaries resulted in the nullification of elections and the installation of candidates with fewer votes.
Amupitan warned that bypassing court orders can lead to significant legal repercussions and jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process.
He stressed that INEC’s cautious approach aims to prevent political instability and maintain public trust in democratic procedures.
