According to a report by Al Jazeera English on Friday 1 May, 2026, reports from southern Lebanon say an Israeli military operation has left a monastery and a school run by nuns in ruins, adding to the growing damage in the border region.

According to the state-run National News Agency, the buildings in the village of Yaroun were destroyed after Israeli forces carried out a series of demolitions in the area. Residents and local reports describe a wider pattern of destruction — homes flattened, small businesses wiped out, and roads torn up, leaving parts of the town barely recognisable.

And it doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident. Accounts coming out of the region suggest entire neighbourhoods along the border have been heavily damaged in recent weeks, as fighting and military operations continue to reshape the landscape in southern Lebanon.

What’s also drawn attention is that the destruction hasn’t been limited to one type of community. Christian towns in the area have also been affected, raising concern among religious groups and observers. Just last month, an image circulating online — showing a soldier damaging a statue of Jesus in the south — triggered a wave of criticism and renewed focus on the impact of the conflict on cultural and religious sites.
