According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has stated that he is weighing the possibility of voting for activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore in the 2027 general elections, while firmly distancing himself from several major political parties he says he no longer supports following his recent disengagement from partisan structures.
Lawal made this known during an interview on TVC, where he spoke shortly after announcing his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He explained that his exit from the party was influenced by what he described as irregularities surrounding its presidential primary process, which ultimately produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s candidate.
In his remarks, Lawal emphasized that his decision to step away from the ADC should not be interpreted as an automatic endorsement of any mainstream political contender.
Instead, he presented it as a personal response to growing dissatisfaction with the range of political choices currently available within Nigeria’s political system.
He further expressed concern about the broader political environment, stating that he remains unconvinced by both President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as viable leadership options.
According to him, neither of the two leading figures aligns with the kind of governance direction he considers desirable based on his assessment of the current political landscape.
Despite his criticism of major political actors, the former SGF clarified that he is not engaged in active campaigning for any candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
He maintained that he has largely withdrawn from frontline partisan involvement and now considers himself mostly retired from day-to-day political activities, even though he still follows political developments.
Lawal also indicated that while he intends to participate in the 2027 general elections by casting his vote, he has not yet finalized his choice of candidate.
He noted that his decision-making process remains open-ended, although he acknowledged that Omoyele Sowore remains one of the individuals he is currently considering among the limited options he finds acceptable.
He further revealed that he has systematically ruled out support for several political platforms as part of his reassessment of his political alignment ahead of the election cycle, suggesting a narrowing field of parties and candidates he is willing to associate with going forward.
“I’ve eliminated APC, now I have eliminated ADC and I can tell you categorically that I have eliminated NDC,” he added.
