Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Saturday met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja, in what appears to be a major political move ahead of the 2027 elections.
Information made available to Politics Nigeria indicates that the meeting took place at Atiku’s residence in the Federal Capital Territory.
Both men are influential northern politicians and have played major roles in Nigeria’s political landscape over the years.
Although details of their closed-door discussion were not made public, sources familiar with the development say the talks are not unconnected with ongoing coalition efforts among opposition leaders seeking to strengthen their chances in future elections.
Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has confirmed that Kwankwaso has concluded plans to leave his current political platform. The group disclosed that the former Kano governor will officially defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to the announcement, Kwankwaso is expected to formally register with the ADC on Monday, March 30, 2026.
The move is seen as a strategic step that could reshape political alignments, especially in the North.
Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate and senator, commands a strong grassroots following through the Kwankwasiyya Movement. His decision to join the ADC is likely to boost the party’s visibility and influence nationwide.
