Mixed reactions as Court clears Jonathan to contest presidential election

The Federal High Court, Abuja, ruling which cleared the path for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election has triggered contrasting reactions across the country’s major political divides; sparking celebration in a faction of the main opposition party, indifference from the ruling party and solemn warnings from elder statesmen and civil society stakeholders.
A legal practitioner, Johnmary Jideobi, had instituted a suit seeking an order restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The plaintiff had specifically asked the court to stop INEC from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
ADC Presidential Primaries: Atiku Coasts To Victory With Wide Margin
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced results of its presidential primary in 11 states so far, indicating that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is leading his rivals, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and business man, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen by a wide margin.
The results were announced by returning officers of various states but Presided over by the Chairman Presidential Primary Committee , Chief Ikechi Emenike .
Rotimi Amaechi and Muhammad Hayatu-Deen has rejected the results and credibility of the process over alleged irregularities.
The former minister of transportation and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who rejected the outcome of the ADC presidential primaries, described it the results as “concocted” and lacking credibility.
ADC Defends Primary Process Amid Rigging Allegations
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has defended the credibility of its presidential primary process amid allegations of irregularities and rigging raised by presidential aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday night, said the party had not seen any evidence to either validate or dismiss the claims.
He stressed that the collation process was still ongoing.
We don’t have any evidence to be able to support his position or to deny his position because we’ve not collated the results,” Abdullahi stated.
Army debunks alleged fresh killing of general, wife’s abduction near Abuja
The Nigerian Army has debunked a viral social media report of the killing of late Major General Hassan Ahmed and the abduction of his wife in an incident near the nation’s capital, Abuja.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Army said the “misleading” report was recirculated as the incident occurred in 2021.
The statement reads, “The Nigerian Army has noted with concern a misleading social media report currently circulating, falsely claiming the recent killing of Late Major General Hassan Ahmed and the abduction of his wife near Abuja.
This report is completely false and is a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the tragic incident involving Late Major General Hassan Ahmed occurred on 15 July 2021 along the Abuja–Lokoja Road.
