According to a report by Punch on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the National Democratic Congress has granted waivers to former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, allowing them to contest senatorial seats under the party in the 2027 general elections.

The approval covers Omo-Agege’s bid for the Delta Central Senatorial District and Ochei’s aspiration for the Delta North Senatorial District.

The decision was announced on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, who explained that the waivers were approved following the formal defection of both politicians from the All Progressives Congress to the National Democratic Congress.

The party leadership described the development as part of efforts to strengthen its structure ahead of the next general elections.

According to the statement, the leadership of the party considered the political experience, leadership capacity, and grassroots influence of both politicians in granting the waivers.

It added that both men are expected to boost the party’s electoral chances in Delta State given their longstanding involvement in the state’s political landscape.

Omo-Agege recently announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress after weeks of speculation about his political future.

In his announcement, he said the decision followed extensive consultations with supporters, political associates, and stakeholders across Delta State.

He also declared his intention to return to the Senate, stating that he would contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat under the National Democratic Congress platform in 2027.

He described the move as a response to calls from his constituents for renewed representation and stronger leadership.

The former deputy senate president expressed concerns about governance in Delta State, arguing that there was a disconnect between the state’s resources and the living conditions of its people.

He pledged to work with the party to strengthen its structure from the grassroots level and prepare for competitive elections.

Omo-Agege further stated that his priority would be to build a stronger political base for the party, attract new members, and ensure credible candidates emerge for various positions.

He promised to focus on accountability, job creation, and development if elected.

The National Democratic Congress, in its statement, reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, inclusion, and transparent political processes.

It assured the newly admitted members of a platform that supports participation and fair competition while working toward broader political success in Delta State and across Nigeria in the 2027 elections.
