Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has defended Peter Obi’s decision to contest under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that the former presidential candidate continues to enjoy widespread support despite concerns raised by critics about the movement’s transition to a new political platform.
Tanko made the remarks during an appearance on Arise News, where he discussed recent political developments and the implications of Obi’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the NDC. His comments come amid ongoing debates over whether the movement’s supporters would remain united following the shift to a different political party.
Addressing questions about the strength of the Obidient Movement and its ability to retain supporters across the country, Tanko dismissed suggestions that the change in political platform would weaken the movement’s influence or reduce its appeal among voters.
According to him, the continued loyalty demonstrated by supporters is evidence of the confidence many Nigerians have in Peter Obi as a political figure. He argued that the movement’s support extends beyond party affiliation and is instead rooted in the trust and expectations that supporters have placed in the candidate.
During the interview, Tanko highlighted what he described as the unique nature of Obi’s political following, noting that large numbers of supporters have remained committed despite changes in political circumstances.
He stated:“I have never seen a presidential candidate move millions of people from one party to another with the majority remaining intact, which shows the absolute trust in that candidate.”

He suggested that many backers are motivated by a shared vision for governance and national development rather than by attachment to a specific political organization.
