Former lawmaker and activist Shehu Sani has reacted to the decision of former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, and former Chief of Air Staff, Saddique Abubakar, to step away from active politics.
Sani, in a post on X, linked their decisions to the challenges of Nigeria’s political system, suggesting that the country’s style of politics can be difficult for individuals who are not prepared for intense political competition.
Shittu recently announced his withdrawal from active partisan politics after expressing dissatisfaction with the conduct of his party’s primary election. The former minister said the process was affected by alleged candidate imposition, manipulation, and a lack of internal democracy.
According to him, the experience convinced him to leave active politics and focus on Islamic Dawah and other religious activities, which he considers more fulfilling on a personal level.
Similarly, former Chief of Air Staff Saddique Abubakar announced his retirement from politics after spending about five years in the political arena. Abubakar joined politics in 2021 after retiring from the Nigerian Air Force and later emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Bauchi State for the 2023 election.
He, however, lost the governorship race to the incumbent governor, Bala Mohammed.
In his words, “Ex Minister Adebayo Shitu from Oyo reportedly said he has quit politics after he failed to secure the primaries ticket and the Ex Chief of Air Staff Sadiq Abubakar from Bauchi also made a similar announcement of his exit. Our kind of rugged politics is not for the gentle-hearted.”
