Retired Major General John Enenche, a former Director of Defence Information, has urged Nigerians to abandon what he described as a misplaced perception of terrorists, bandits and kidnappers as “brothers,” insisting that violent criminal groups should be regarded as enemies of the state.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Enenche argued that the country’s worsening security crisis requires a change in mindset, warning that continued attempts to humanise violent actors could undermine efforts to tackle insecurity.
The retired army officer said Nigerians must confront the reality of the threat posed by armed groups operating across the country, stressing that individuals responsible for killings, kidnappings and attacks on communities cannot be considered allies or members of the same social family.
“And these people are not our friends; they are not our brothers,” Enenche said. “I want to categorically tell Nigerians: let us tell ourselves the truth. What kind of brother wants to kill you?”
He maintained that terrorists, bandits and other violent criminal elements should be viewed strictly as enemies of Nigeria, regardless of their ethnic, religious or regional backgrounds.
According to him, the persistent wave of attacks across different parts of the country demonstrates that the security challenge remains far from over, contrary to claims that significant victories have already been recorded against insurgent groups.
Enenche warned that the country must stop underestimating the threat posed by criminal networks, describing them as adversaries determined to destabilise communities and undermine national security.
The former defence spokesman called for a more aggressive and realistic approach to tackling insecurity, urging political leaders and citizens alike to recognise the scale of the challenge and support efforts aimed at defeating violent groups operating across the country.
His comments come amid renewed concerns over rising cases of kidnapping, terrorist attacks and violent crime in several parts of Nigeria, including recent abductions involving schoolchildren and other civilians.
