According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has thrown his weight behind the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) following its recent resolutions on the country’s worsening security challenges.
Reacting via his verified X handle on Wednesday, the former Vice President backed the communique issued by CAN leadership under Archbishop Daniel Okoh during the 2026 National Church Leaders Summit.
Atiku asserted that CAN’s demand for an immediate overhaul of the national security architecture directly reflects his persistent criticisms of the current administration.
“The demand for a comprehensive review of the nation’s security architecture, enhanced intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency cooperation… are all fully in line with my position on the failure of the Tinubu-led Federal Government,” Atiku stated.
He lauded the unusual unity displayed by various Christian blocs—including the Catholic Secretariat, Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, and TEKAN/ECWA—in declaring a three-day national mourning period.
According to him, this spiritual wake-up call should prompt deep reflection among current political leaders.
Highlighting that terrorism, banditry, and violent crime do not spare victims based on ethnic or religious affiliations, the opposition leader urged Islamic organizations to join the campaign.
“I enjoin other faith organisations especially of the Muslim block to lend their voices to this wake-up call,” he added.
Concluding his statement, Atiku explicitly called out the presidency, urging swift execution of practical solutions to salvage the nation.
He noted that the political opposition has been routinely ignored, but insisted that President Bola Tinubu must ponder his next steps beyond mere rhetoric for his remaining months in office.
