Major General John Enenche (Rtd.), a former Director of Defence Information, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, revealing that even senior military officers have not been spared by the growing wave of kidnappings across the country.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the retired army general cited the reported abduction of Major General Rabiu Abubakar as evidence that insecurity has reached alarming levels despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to contain it.
Enenche, who was assessing the state of security in the country, said the reality on the ground does not support claims that Nigeria is winning the fight against insurgency, banditry and kidnapping. According to him, the scale and frequency of attacks suggest that the threat remains widespread and continues to evolve.
Drawing from a personal experience, the retired general disclosed that he recently received information that Major General Rabiu Abubakar, the officer who succeeded him in a previous military assignment, had been kidnapped.
“Just the other day, I received news that the officer who handed over to me, Major General Rabiu Abubakar, had been kidnapped. I heard about it on a Friday,” Enenche said.
He noted that while some incidents become public knowledge, many others go unreported, adding that the security challenge facing the country may be more severe than most Nigerians realise.
The former defence spokesman commended the efforts of security agencies but maintained that the scale of the threat appears to be overwhelming current responses. He said the frequency of kidnappings and violent attacks demonstrates that criminal groups remain active and capable of striking across different parts of the country.
Enenche argued that Nigerians must abandon the narrative that the country has largely overcome terrorism and insurgency, insisting that the war against violent criminal groups is far from over.
According to him, the continued targeting of citizens, communities and even high-profile individuals shows that insecurity remains a major national emergency requiring stronger and more innovative responses.
The retired general called for renewed commitment from political leaders, security institutions and other stakeholders, stressing that the country must intensify efforts to confront armed groups and restore public confidence in national security.
