According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicles on Wednesday June 3, 2026, Chelsea star Enzo Fernández has reportedly informed the club that he wants clarity over his future before the start of the World Cup this summer, as uncertainty continues to surround his long-term situation at Stamford Bridge.
The Argentine midfielder had already hinted before the end of the domestic season that he holds ambitions of playing for Real Madrid in the future, while also expressing admiration for the Spanish capital and its football culture.
Reports suggest Chelsea would be open to exploring a swap deal involving Fernández, with Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde mentioned as a player the Blues would be interested in bringing in as part of any potential negotiation.
Fernández is now fully focused on representing Argentina at the World Cup and helping them defend their title, even as he prepares to face teammates from his club during the tournament in a highly anticipated international campaign.
According to reports from Mail Online, the midfielder wants his club situation resolved before the tournament begins, which is just over a week away, allowing him to concentrate fully on international duty without distractions.
The report also indicates that Fernández is not necessarily demanding an immediate exit before the World Cup, meaning he has not completely closed the door on continuing at Chelsea under new management.
Incoming head coach Xabi Alonso is believed to have initially planned to build his team around Fernández, although he is aware of the midfielder’s openness to a possible departure depending on how discussions develop.
Alonso, who officially begins work in July, would ideally prefer Fernández to join his squad for pre-season, where he could integrate him into his tactical system and long-term plans at the club.
Chelsea, however, are said to view Fernández as a valuable asset but not untouchable, with players like Cole Palmer, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo considered the core group guaranteed to remain at the club.
His future therefore remains open, as Chelsea weigh up their options while also facing growing speculation about other potential departures, including left-back Marc Cucurella, who has attracted interest from Atlético Madrid.
