President Bola Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The planned address forms a major highlight of the nationwide program unveiled by the Federal Government through the Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated on Tuesday to coordinate events marking the occasion.
According to the committee, several activities have been scheduled ahead of the celebration, beginning with a World Press Conference on June 4, followed by special Juma’at prayers on June 5 and an inter-denominational church service on June 7.
Other programs include a Democracy Day public lecture slated for June 9, youth and women-focused activities on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day Gala Night to round off the celebrations.
Speaking during the inauguration of the committee, government officials paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other pro-democracy figures who played significant roles in the struggle that led to the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Expressing confidence in the committee’s capacity, Akume urged all stakeholders to collaborate toward ensuring a successful commemoration that honors Nigeria’s democratic heroes and reinforces the nation’s dedication to democratic governance.
With just days left before the celebration, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) directed members of the committee to commence work immediately to ensure the smooth execution of all approved programs and activities.
He also disclosed that the celebration would be “modest but purposeful,” stressing that the approach aligns with the administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and responsible spending.
The annual celebration is expected to bring together government officials, civil society groups, religious leaders, and citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by those who fought for democratic governance.
Democracy Day, observed every June 12, commemorates the historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria’s history.
