According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) electoral committee in Adamawa State, Dr. Nicholas Msheliza, accused former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, of attempting to influence the outcome of the party’s recent presidential primary election in the state.
Msheliza, who served as the Returning Officer during the primary, alleged that Lawal contacted him after the results had been compiled and urged him to alter the outcome from Hong Local Government Area in favour of businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen instead of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on the matter, Msheliza stated, “he called and requested that I reverse the results to favour his candidate.” He maintained that he rejected the request because the figures reflected the votes actually cast during the exercise.
According to the results cited by Msheliza, Atiku secured 11,991 votes in Hong LGA, while Hayatu-Deen received 2,493 votes and former Minister Rotimi Amaechi polled 377 votes.
The Returning Officer further alleged that following his refusal to alter the results, Lawal dissolved the existing local electoral committee and established a separate structure that conducted what he described as an unauthorized exercise in several local government areas, including Hong, Madagali, Michika and Mubi North.
Msheliza claimed the parallel process produced fabricated results that conflicted with the figures already recorded by the original committee. He said the exercise was carried out without consultation and lacked the proper electoral materials required for the process.
He challenged Lawal to make his result sheets public so they could be compared with the official records, adding that he was prepared to provide documentary evidence to support his allegations.
