Accusing Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani of failing to accept the results of recent elections and continuing to portray himself as crucial to the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State, former senator from Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has spoken out against Zailani.

In an interview that aired on Arise Television on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Sani made the comments in response to those supposedly made by Zailani in light of recent political events inside the APC in Kaduna State.

Sani argues that the capacity to accept success and failure is a crucial trait of a politician. People should respect the results of political contests, he said, since there are always going to be winners and losers.

According to Sani, “you don’t appear to be a good politician” if one is unable to accept defeat or acknowledge that they were unsuccessful in an election.

It should be recognised without additional controversy, the former senator emphasised, since Zailani had participated in an election and been beaten. “Zailani was involved in a legal battle, losing,” he said.

The former Speaker apparently said that the APC could have trouble winning the Kaduna State election if he wasn’t involved, and Sani denied the accusation. He cast doubt on that claim by referencing the state’s electoral history. The second point, according to Sani, is that Tinubu will be defeated in the Kaduna State poll unless he is removed from the race.

Despite the involvement of party leaders and stakeholders, the APC suffered heavy losses in Kaduna during the 2023 general elections, according to the former congressman, who maintained that the existing electoral records do not back up such assertions.

Let me ask you this: the PDP won his city council. According to him, Atiku defeated Tinubu in the 2023 Kaduna State elections, which Zailani and his associates were heavily involved in during that time.

At the same time, Sani brought attention to the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) success in the parliamentary elections. “Out of around thirteen House of Representatives seats, the PDP gained ten. He said that all three senators were PDP members.

He claims that these results show that the APC lost the state election despite having prominent members who are now claiming to be politically relevant. Because of this, the APC still failed to win an election during his heyday. Sani emphasised that being firmly planted in the party is crucial for electoral success.

Sani, speaking from personal experience, said that he knows what it’s like to win and lose an election, and that accepting bad results is a part of being a democratic citizen. Similarly, I was not elected. He made it clear that he has experienced both the triumph and the anguish of losing elections in the past.

In his final remarks, he emphasised that the voting had taken place and that all participants had the chance to keep tabs on it through their representatives. They need to admit defeat. It was a losing effort. The ward level was the site of the central senatorial election. People took part, sent representatives, and ultimately came up short. For Sani, that was the end of it.
