According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday 3rd June 2026, former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has explained why he is supporting Peter Obi for the 2027 presidential election while continuing to endorse key economic policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on ARISE TV on Wednesday, Omo-Agege said his support for Obi should not be interpreted as opposition to the current administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira.
The former senator noted that he backed the reforms when they were introduced and still believes they are necessary for the country’s economic stability and growth.
According to him, both Tinubu and Obi have advocated similar economic ideas, making it possible for him to support the policies while aligning politically with the former Anambra State governor.
Omo-Agege, who recently resigned from the APC, said his decision was influenced by his conviction that Obi would be better positioned to earn public trust and secure wider acceptance for the reforms among Nigerians.
He argued that the challenge lies not in the policies themselves but in convincing citizens of their long-term benefits.
The Delta politician maintained that his stance on the reforms has remained consistent, stressing that economic policies should be assessed based on their merits rather than the political platform from which they emerge.
He added that his endorsement of Obi reflects his confidence in the Labour Party figure’s ability to implement difficult but necessary reforms while carrying Nigerians along in the process.
