According to a report by the Times of Israel on Wednesday June 3rd, 2026, US President Donald Trump says Iran has effectively committed to staying away from nuclear weapons as negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue to move forward.
Speaking during an appearance on The New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast, Trump expressed confidence that Iran had accepted one of the key conditions being discussed in the talks. According to him, preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear arsenal remains a central objective, and he believes Iranian officials have already agreed to that principle.
Trump noted that while any agreement could theoretically change in the future, Iran had accepted the condition during the discussions, describing it as one of the most important points on the table.
The exact framework under which Iran made that commitment remains unclear. However, previous reports indicate that a draft memorandum of understanding under discussion would require Tehran to formally pledge that it will not pursue nuclear weapons. The White House has previously acknowledged that such a provision is part of ongoing negotiations.
The US president also touched on Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, saying he believes the leader is playing a direct role in efforts to bring the conflict to an end. Trump suggested that Khamenei commands significant respect within Iran and is closely involved in the diplomatic process.
At the same time, Trump declined to address reports that Khamenei was seriously wounded during Israel’s initial strikes in the war, attacks that reportedly killed his father, Ali Khamenei, along with several other family members.
Looking ahead, Trump indicated he would be open to a face-to-face meeting with the Iranian leader. He said he would welcome the opportunity and suggested such a meeting could eventually happen, depending on how negotiations and broader developments unfold.
