Former presidential candidate of the Accord Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has raised concerns about the Federal Government’s handling of Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, arguing that effective leadership remains a critical factor in the country’s fight against insurgency and terrorism.
Speaking during a live political programme monitored on Channels Television, the businessman and politician offered a detailed assessment of the current security situation across several parts of the country. He maintained that military operations alone cannot deliver lasting success if they are not backed by a clearly defined national security strategy directed by competent political leadership.
According to a video published on the official YouTube channel of Channels Television on June 2, 2026, Olawepo-Hashim questioned the level of strategic guidance being provided to security agencies by the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
While discussing the challenges confronting the armed forces, he emphasized the importance of leadership in sustaining military morale and operational effectiveness. In his words, “no soldier wants to die for a Commander-in-Chief when they don’t understand what he is doing.”
The former presidential candidate argued that members of the armed forces require not only adequate equipment and resources but also a clear understanding of the mission they are expected to carry out. He stressed that patriotism and commitment among troops are strengthened when political leaders communicate a coherent vision and strategic direction.
Olawepo-Hashim further stated that Nigeria’s security crisis should not be viewed merely as a collection of criminal activities occurring in different parts of the country. Rather, he described the challenge as a form of unconventional warfare involving organized extremist groups with broader regional and international connections.
According to him, the country is increasingly facing sophisticated guerrilla-style operations that demand specialized counter-insurgency responses. He warned that some extremist elements linked to international terrorist organizations are allegedly attempting to establish operational footholds in parts of the country that have historically been considered relatively stable.
