Following the announcement of a tentative two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, Russia has criticized the U.S. approach, calling it a “crushing defeat.” Moscow claims that the American strategy, led by President Donald Trump, of pursuing a one-sided, aggressive campaign against Iran under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has not succeeded.
According to Anadolu English on April 8, 2026, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in an interview that Russia had warned from the outset that there was no military solution to the tensions with Iran. She argued that the ceasefire validates Moscow’s position while undermining those who pushed for escalation.
Zakharova added: “All the statements about being more aggressive, taking stronger action, posting more online, and claiming ‘victory is near’ this approach has once again suffered a crushing defeat. The strategy of a one-track, unprovoked attack has failed.”
She emphasized that President Vladimir Putin’s administration has consistently advocated for an immediate halt to hostilities and a genuine political and diplomatic resolution. Russia has maintained close military and economic ties with Tehran throughout the conflict, she noted.
The ceasefire, announced Tuesday by President Trump, suspends bombing and offensive operations against Iran for two weeks. U.S. Vice President JD Vance cautioned that the truce remains fragile and warned that any violations by either side could quickly escalate the situation back into full-scale conflict.
