Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has criticised the recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, where political leaders agreed to present a single candidate for future elections.
In a video shared by SYMFONI TV, speaking to journalists, Sowore expressed concern that many of the figures involved in the meeting have been part of Nigeria’s leadership for decades. He pointed to individuals such as Atiku Abubakar and David Mark, arguing that they have long been active in the country’s political system without delivering the level of change many Nigerians expect.
He compared past and present leadership, noting that some of these figures held powerful positions as far back as the 1980s and are still playing key roles today. Sowore questioned why younger Nigerians are not being given more opportunities to lead, especially as a new generation faces the country’s current challenges.
The activist also revealed that he was invited to the Ibadan meeting but became uneasy after seeing names like Jerry Gana associated with the event. He described this as a sign that the same political class continues to dominate opposition movements.
Sowore further mentioned that former president Olusegun Obasanjo was expected at the gathering but did not attend.
In his words, “I was invited by them, they wrote me a letter, when I saw the name of Jerry Gana there, I said, ‘What’s wrong with Nigeria?'”
