In a recent video post by Pulse Nigeria on X, on Monday, May 18, 2026, Nigeria woke up to heartbreaking news on Sunday, as a Maths teacher who spent his life inside a classroom was killed in captivity by terrorists, and a governor had to stand before cameras and confirm it.
On Friday, gunmen riding motorcycles invaded communities within the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota axis of Oriire Local Government Area, Ogbomoso, and abducted students and staff members of Community High School, L.A. Primary School, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.
By Sunday, a video had reached the state government, and there was no longer any way to soften what it showed.
“7 teachers were abducted. Unfortunately, we got a video that the Maths teacher was killed by the terrorists.”
Governor Seyi Makinde made the confirmation during a press briefing, saying the government had received a video showing the killing, and described the situation as difficult and challenging, stressing that there were no quick fixes but that the government would continue to push all available resources toward resolving the crisis.
Makinde disclosed that both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches were being deployed to secure the release of the remaining victims, while tactical teams comprising policemen, soldiers, Amotekun operatives, and hunters had already been mobilised to pursue the abductors.
Some of those operatives paid the ultimate price, losing their lives after running into improvised explosive devices planted by the abductors during the rescue operation.
Six persons were arrested within the affected locality over alleged links to the attackers, with three additional persons of interest detained by another security outfit, some believed to have served as informants handling logistics for the terrorists.
Makinde also linked the attack to increasing pressure being mounted on terrorist groups in the North-East, warning that fleeing armed groups were moving into other parts of the country, including the South-West.
The governor announced that daily press briefings would be held going forward to keep the public informed.
The remaining six teachers are still in captivity, and the exact number of missing children has not yet been confirmed.
