According to a report by the Punch on Monday, May 4, 2026, political tension has escalated within the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress following claims of a growing rift linked to alleged alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
The controversy centres on allegations made by the Edo APC Media Diaspora Group against Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of attempting to influence party primaries in favour of candidates reportedly connected to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
In a statement issued by the group’s leadership, concerns were raised over what they described as undue pressure on political appointees within Edo South. The group alleged, “There are allegations that the governor threatened his Edo South appointees with removal from office”
They further claimed that the governor was using his position to push support for certain aspirants, warning that such actions could undermine party unity and alienate loyal members who contributed to the party’s success in the state.
The group also alleged that there were prior arrangements involving political concessions, including claims that parts of the party structure were being influenced by external interests. They expressed fears that such developments could weaken the APC’s internal democracy and hand strategic control to rival political blocs.
In addition, accusations were made regarding the appointment of individuals linked to opposition parties into government positions, with claims that longstanding party members were being sidelined in the process.
However, the state government dismissed the allegations, insisting that Governor Okpebholo remains committed to inclusive leadership and fair political processes.
Reacting to the claims, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, stated that the governor has the constitutional right to support any aspirant he believes aligns with the interests of the people, while maintaining that no candidate would be imposed on party members.
He added that the governor’s leadership style is rooted in dialogue, consultation, and consensus-building rather than coercion, urging the public to disregard what he described as attempts to discredit the administration.
