According to a report by Anadolu Agency, on Monday 20 April, 2026, as efforts are made to relaunch negotiations with Iran, US President Donald Trump has indicated that he is willing to consider suggestions made by Pakistan’s military leadership concerning the continuation of the US naval closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A second round of talks between Washington and Tehran is supposed to take place in Islamabad, but the blockade, which has been in place since late February, is still a major obstacle.
While speaking with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir over the phone recently, Trump said that he would think about ideas to loosen limitations on sea movement across the vital energy corridor.
Reports from those in the know indicate that Munir stressed how the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is obstructing diplomatic advancements and making it harder to re-engage Iranian authorities in negotiations.
After the United States and Israel launched coordinated military actions against Iran on February 28, the waterway became partially shut and has since become a key issue in the wider geopolitical dispute.
The two countries are due to meet again in Islamabad for follow-up discussions, and this exchange is happening just before those negotiations. President Trump has authorised a US mission to visit Pakistan in order to hold negotiations.
Nevertheless, Iran has not officially stated its intention to participate, insisting that the easing of restrictions on its ports and marine trade is a prerequisite for any substantive discussion.
Pakistan has played a pivotal role as a go-between in the crisis, allowing for unusually high-level communication between the US and Iran.
The first direct engagement of its type since diplomatic relations were cut after the Iranian Revolution took place in Islamabad in mid-April, when the two parties held preliminary discussions. Although such talks failed to produce an agreement, they were preceded by the two-week truce proclaimed on April 8 as a result of successful mediation by Pakistan.
The Iranian government seems to be indecisive over the best course of diplomatic action. President Masoud Pezeshkian has emphasised that no side benefits from a protracted conflict and has called for “every rational and diplomatic path” to alleviate tensions.
The foreign ministry’s spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, has been more forceful in his rejection of deadlines imposed from outside sources and his insistence that Iran will not budge on issues of national sovereignty.
Worldwide energy markets are on edge due to fears of disruptions caused by the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which a considerable amount of oil shipments travel through.
