According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, US President Donald Trump has declared that Iran will “never” be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, while suggesting that tensions between Washington and Tehran could soon ease either through diplomacy or possible military action.
Speaking on Tuesday, Trump revealed that he had been close to approving a military strike against Iran before deciding to delay the operation.
According to the US president, he was “an hour away” from authorising the attack before granting Tehran a short period of “two or three days” to respond during ongoing negotiations.
Trump said he hoped additional military action would not be necessary but warned that another “strong strike” remained an option if discussions failed to produce results.
He also disclosed that several international leaders had contacted him in recent days and informed him of what he described as “significant progress” regarding the Iranian issue.
The US president accused Iran of attempting to destabilise the Middle East and insisted that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to international access.
“The Strait of Hormuz is international waters, not Iran’s property,” Trump said.
He further claimed that Iran’s military ability to launch retaliation remained limited.
Trump stated that he would be willing to accept major economic consequences, including a significant decline in financial markets, if it prevented what he described as a potential “nuclear holocaust.”
“I will not allow the world to blow up before my eyes,” he said.
On Monday, Trump confirmed that a planned military strike against Iran had been postponed following appeals from Gulf leaders and what he described as ongoing “serious negotiations” with Tehran.
