According to a report by TheCable Newspaper on Thursday May 28, 2026, Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has identified another Nigerian who was reportedly killed while fighting for Russian forces in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities named the deceased as Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, born on April 28, 1992. The agency alleged that the Nigerian was serving as a mercenary for Russia before he died during combat operations against Ukrainian troops.
The latest development has drawn fresh attention to reports of foreign nationals allegedly joining the Russian military campaign in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials claimed that several foreigners from different countries have been recruited to support Russia’s military operations since the conflict intensified.
Although details surrounding how and when Victor allegedly joined the Russian side remain unclear, Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence insisted that he was among foreign fighters identified on the battlefield.
The report has sparked conversations among Nigerians on social media, with many expressing concern over citizens allegedly becoming involved in foreign conflicts.
Some also called for closer monitoring of recruitment networks that may lure young Africans into dangerous war zones with promises of financial rewards.
As of time of filling this report, both the Nigerian government and the Russians has not publicly reacted to the claim made by Ukrainian authorities on the latest allegation involving Nigerian national.
