According to a report by The Kyiv Post on Thursday, 28 May, 2026, a series of targeted drone strikes in the Black Sea has hit three oil tankers linked to Russia’s covert maritime operations.
The maritime incident occurred in international waters near the Turkish coast, a critical shipping corridor for global energy transit.
According to official statements from Ukraine’s military intelligence, the targeted vessels are part of the Kremlin’s dedicated “shadow fleet” an aging network of commercially registered ships utilized by Moscow to bypass international energy sanctions and maintain the financial flow of its oil exports.
The shadow fleet relies on flags of convenience, obscured ownership structures, and deactivated transponders to transport crude oil above Western price caps.
Security analysts indicate that the Black Sea has increasingly become a direct confrontation zone, with maritime infrastructure and logistical supply chains serving as primary targets.
By conducting operations near the Turkish straits, the drone strikes directly disrupt the primary maritime corridor Russia uses to reach Mediterranean and global markets.
This region is heavily monitored due to its proximity to NATO member Turkey, which regulates access between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean under international maritime treaties.
