Two sources familiar with the ongoing discussions between the American Government, and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran under the leadership of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, revealed that negotiations between the United States, and Iran have hit a significant stalemate, with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran insisting that billions of dollars in frozen assets be released during the very first phase of any preliminary agreement.
According to a report made by the Jerusalem Post on Thursday, 4 June, 2026, the two sources familiar with the discussions, revealed that the dispute has emerged as a central obstacle preventing progress toward a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would serve as an initial step toward a broader nuclear deal.
Meanwhile, regional mediators have attempted to bridge the gap in recent days, proposing several compromise formulas, after one option raised which was the creation of a humanitarian fund worth several billion dollars, and that would be restricted to purchasing medicine, food, and agricultural goods for Iran, one of the sources said.
However, Iranian negotiators have rejected such conditional mechanisms, demanding instead immediate access to liquid funds as part of Phase A of an MOU, before implementing any substantive measures on the ground.
In another related development,US officials have firmly rejected the demand of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran under the leadership of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, arguing that sanctions relief and the unfreezing of assets must be tied directly to verifiable Iranian actions.
Senior officials from the President Donald Trump’s administration have also communicated to mediators, especially the Pakistani Government that the American Government would not release any significant funds at the outset of an agreement without concrete Iranian concessions regarding their nuclear program, and security arrangements related to the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
