According to a report by Punch on Monday, May 11, 2026, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ken Asogwa, has acknowledged that the exit of the party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, created a major gap within the opposition party.

Asogwa made the statement on Monday during a television interview while reacting to Obi’s recent political alignment with the coalition associated with the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His remarks come at a time when opposition parties in Nigeria are experiencing major political movements, consultations, and realignments in preparation for the next election cycle.

According to Asogwa, the Labour Party cannot ignore the impact Peter Obi had on the growth and visibility of the party during and after the 2023 presidential election.

He explained that Obi became one of the most influential figures within the party and attracted a large number of supporters across different parts of the country.

The party spokesman admitted that Obi’s presence contributed significantly to the party’s national recognition and electoral performance.

He noted that losing such a prominent political figure naturally created a vacuum within the organisation, especially at a time when political parties are already positioning themselves for future contests.

The Labour Party official, however, maintained that the party remains active and focused despite the recent political developments.

He explained that the party leadership is working to strengthen its internal structure and continue its activities across the country.

According to him, political parties often experience changes in membership and leadership, particularly after major elections, but such developments do not necessarily signal the collapse of the organisation.

He stressed that the Labour Party still has members and supporters committed to its ideals and political direction ahead of future elections.

Peter Obi’s recent alignment with opposition coalition activities has continued to attract attention within Nigeria’s political environment.

Since the conclusion of the 2023 elections, discussions about opposition unity and possible alliances have become increasingly prominent.

Several opposition figures have been involved in consultations aimed at building stronger platforms capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Obi’s movement toward coalition politics has therefore become a major subject of discussion among political stakeholders and party supporters, especially considering the level of support he enjoyed during the last presidential election.

He said, “We can’t close our eyes to the fact that we lost Peter Obi, and he was a colossus within the party.”
