BREAKING: We Don’t Know Why INEC Issued That Statement on April Fool’s Day; We Hope They Withdraw It —Igbawua

Special Adviser on Research, Policy, and Strategy to the ADC National Chairman, Chille Igbawua, has questioned the recent statement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) derecognizing the David Mark-led National Working Committee of the party, expressing concerns over its timing and implications.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Igbawua noted that the statement was released on April 1, a date globally associated with pranks, suggesting that the commission’s position was unexpected and difficult to interpret. His remarks come amid ongoing legal and political discussions surrounding the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He maintained that the matter relating to the party’s leadership remains before the courts, emphasizing that the Court of Appeal had earlier returned the case to a lower court for proper hearing on its merits. He also stressed that, to his knowledge, no court has invalidated the leadership of the party under David Mark, who currently heads the ADC’s national working committee.

According to him, “Well, the fact is that we are still to come to terms on why INEC decided to issue this statement on 1st April, which is April Fool’s Day. We’re supposing that they may withdraw it after April Fools’ Day because this kind of thing happens on that day, and we believe it’s one of them, but what we know is that INEC is not a court of law. The court of appeal remitted the case to the trial court so that it could be tried on the merits. At no time did any court question the position of the David Mark-led national working committee.”
