According to Aljazeera News, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, based on the nationality of the ships, the White House stated that President Trump does not consider Iran’s capture of two container ships to be a breach of the truce that ended U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran.
Administration officials have stated that the ships captured by Iranian naval troops earlier this week in critical Gulf waterways were not American or Israeli. Although last month’s ceasefire agreement halted direct military action by the United States and Israel against Iranian installations, it did not forbid Iran from intercepting commercial vessels belonging to third parties.
Since the ships in question were not American or Israeli, a White House statement clarified that the president does not consider Iran’s capture of the two cargo ships as a violation of the truce that ended US-Israeli operations against Iran.
The government’s lack of additional military action shows that they are taking the truce quite literally. Still, on the matter of freedom of navigation, officials have noted that Washington is discussing with allies.
Some say the seizure violates the truce, while Tehran says it’s responding lawfully to maritime transgressions that have not been named.
So far, neither Israel nor the shipowners who lost control of their vessels have made any official statements. In order to avoid any escalation in the region, the White House reaffirmed its support for the ceasefire’s overarching objective.
