“We must continue to unite across divides” – Peter Obi says after meeting Kwankwaso

The 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi has opened up after he met with the former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

In a post made on his X account, Obi said for Nigeria to be restored, there is a need for unity among citizens across all religious, political and ethnic divides.

Recall that Obi had visited three northern states in the country – Kaduna, Katsina and Kano – over the weekend for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

During his visit to Kano, Obi met with Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement in the state.

Speaking on his visit, Obi said, “Yesterday, after visiting Kaduna and Katsina, I travelled to Kano to join my dear elder brother, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the Kwankwasiyya movement to celebrate their annual Sallah festivities.

“I am truly grateful for the warm reception and the spirit of brotherhood that characterised our gathering. At this crucial time in our nation’s history, we must continue to unite across all divides—political, ethnic, and religious—to restore hope and rebuild trust in our country,” Obi wrote on X.

He also noted that Kano state remains a key pillar in the nation’s political ecosystem and a reminder that good governance is achievable.

“Kano remains a vital pillar in Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape. Its rich history of commerce, industry, and human capital serves as a reminder of what is achievable when leadership is guided by vision, competence, and compassion,” Obi added.

Recall that in the build-up to the 2023 general election, all efforts to get Obi and Kwankwaso on the same ticket failed with the latter stating that, he would not jeopardise his presidential ambition to serve as deputy to anyone.

While the recent meeting between the two politicians has elicited celebrations among their supporters, political speculators have also said that there is the possibility that both Obi and Kwankwaso might have reached a truce ahead of the next election.

There are also speculations that both politicians might be working together as a team – possibly on a joint ticket – in the forthcoming 2026 presidential election.
