Former presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, has revealed that he once feared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would target him politically over his past criticisms and opposition activities.
Bwala, who previously served as spokesperson for the Atiku-Okowa presidential campaign during the 2023 elections, disclosed this while reflecting on Nigeria’s political climate and his changing perception of Tinubu’s leadership style.
According to him, he initially believed that openly criticizing Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress could attract retaliation or political persecution. He admitted that the tense atmosphere surrounding the elections contributed to his fears.
“I feared Tinubu would hunt me down,” Bwala said, noting that he expected hostility after the fiercely contested polls and his strong public attacks against the APC government.
However, the lawyer-turned-politician stated that his concerns gradually faded after observing what he described as Tinubu’s tolerant disposition toward critics and opposition figures. He added that his interactions and observations after the election made him reconsider some of his earlier assumptions about the president.
Bwala also stressed the need for politicians and citizens to engage in issue-based politics rather than personal attacks, warning that excessive political bitterness could deepen divisions in the country.
His remarks have since sparked reactions across political circles, especially among supporters of both the ruling party and the opposition, with many interpreting the statement as a sign of softening political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
