According to a report by Channels Television, the Commander of the Special Tactical Squad (STS), ACP Victor Godfrey, has provided fresh details regarding the killing of a traditional ruler in Imo State, revealing that the monarch and five other individuals were ambushed, murdered, and burned beyond recognition after being allegedly lured to a meeting within their community.
Godfrey disclosed the details during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, June 4, 2026, while giving an update on the arrest of suspects connected to the incident and other criminal activities uncovered through ongoing police operations.
According to the police commander, the deceased monarch, HRH Eze Barrister Paulinus Ekwueme, popularly known as the Ochia I of Ochia Kingdom, had spent several years residing in the United States before returning to Nigeria to celebrate the Easter season with members of his community.
Providing further insight into the tragic incident, Godfrey said, “The monarch has spent several years abroad in United States and returned home to celebrate Easter with his people. He was allegedly lured to a meeting at Ochia, his community in Imo State. Upon returning to Owerri, him and five others were ambushed, over-powered and brutally murdered and burnt beyond recognition.”
The police chief explained that investigations into the gruesome attack led to the arrest of several suspects believed to have participated in the crime. He noted that the arrests were achieved through intelligence-driven operations and coordinated tactical efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for violent activities in different parts of the country.
Godfrey further stated that security agencies employed extensive intelligence gathering and strategic operations to track down those linked to the killing. He added that the suspects currently in custody are cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify any additional individuals involved.
The murder of the traditional ruler generated widespread condemnation across Imo State and beyond, prompting calls from residents and community leaders for justice. Many have also urged authorities to strengthen security measures to address rising concerns over violent crimes and ensure the protection of lives and property.
