Former presidential spokesperson, Laolu Akande, has expressed deep concern over the state of affairs in Nigeria, stating that citizens are increasingly bearing what he described as a “tax of fear” due to growing insecurity and institutional challenges across the country.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Akande argued that the nation is experiencing a serious systemic failure that is affecting the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.

According to him, the consequences of this breakdown extend beyond economic hardship, as citizens are now forced to live with constant anxiety and uncertainty about their safety and well-being.

Akande stressed that fear has become an invisible burden that Nigerians pay every day, whether through altered lifestyles, increased security expenses, or the psychological toll of living in an environment where insecurity remains a major concern. He suggested that the situation reflects deeper structural problems that require urgent attention from leaders and institutions.

“There is a systemic breakdown and Nigerians are paying the tax of fear,” Akande said during the interview. He further emphasized the extent of the problem by adding, “There is a tax of fear in the country.”
