According to a report by The Times Of Israel on June 4, 2026, the Israeli Air Force and Israeli Navy carried out overnight strikes across the Gaza Strip, killing senior commanders within Hamas’s general security mechanism, the military said.
The Israel Defense Forces said Hassan Labad, deputy head of the security mechanism, was killed along with senior officials Asem Shabir, Abdullah Abu Kaloub, and Mohammed Abu Marek during the strikes.
“The senior officials of the general security mechanism were eliminated to remove a threat, after they had recently been involved in attempts to rebuild the Hamas terror organization and in assisting the organization’s senior leadership in advancing terror activity against the State of Israel and IDF troops,” the military says in a statement.
The military described the general security mechanism as a covert Hamas unit responsible for protecting senior leaders, managing communications, coordinating meetings, and moving officials between locations during emergencies. It also produces intelligence assessments that support decision-making and operational planning for attacks against Israel, according to the IDF.
It comes amid continued Israeli military operations targeting Hamas infrastructure in Gaza as part of an ongoing campaign following repeated cross-border hostilities. The IDF has frequently stated that it is acting to degrade Hamas’s command structure and disrupt coordination networks used in planning and executing attacks against Israeli forces and civilians.
Israeli officials say such operations are aimed at reducing the operational capability of militant groups and preventing further escalation in the region, while Hamas has in past statements denied similar accusations and condemned Israeli strikes as targeting its political and security leadership structures across Gaza.
