According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has indicated his support for a possible Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He made this position public through a post shared on X on Wednesday, where he alluded to the potential of a joint ticket without directly naming the individuals involved.
In his statement, he suggested that an “O.K” presidential pairing could play a significant role in addressing the country’s current challenges, which he described as a difficult situation requiring urgent attention.
The reference to “O.K” has been widely interpreted to mean Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, with “O” standing for Obi and “K” representing Kwankwaso, both of whom are prominent political figures.
Both politicians, like Bashir’s father, are members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party that has recently attracted attention amid discussions of political realignment.
Peter Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP) and finished in third place, while Rabiu Kwankwaso, who ran on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), came in fourth.
There has been growing advocacy among their supporters, particularly across social media platforms, urging the ADC to present both men as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2027 election, although the order of candidacy remains a subject of ongoing debate.
El-Rufai also expressed the view that Obi should take the presidential slot in 2027, noting that such an arrangement would allow Southern Nigeria to complete an eight-year tenure before power rotates back to the North in 2031.
He said, “At 2031, Any Northernern aspirant feels the compulsion to run, that path would be clear. Let the South complete their remaining 4 years.
“This is my calculus, feel free to disagree.”
