According to a report by Times Of Israel on Thursday, April 23, 2026, The French Foreign Minister has stated that the European Union may soon consider the introduction of sanctions against Israel, citing evolving political developments within the bloc and changes in leadership positions among member states.
According to the minister, recent political shifts in Hungary could influence long-standing EU discussions on restrictive measures. He suggested that the formation of a new Hungarian government may alter the country’s previous stance on blocking such proposals within the European Union.
“I have been calling for sanctions against individuals or organizations responsible for violence against Palestinians, including in the West Bank, for a year. I think we will be able to approve these measures in the coming days,” the French Foreign Minister stated.
He further indicated that diplomatic efforts have been ongoing within the EU to build consensus around targeted sanctions, particularly against individuals and groups allegedly linked to acts of violence in the occupied territories.
Previously, proposed EU-level sanctions were reportedly blocked due to opposition from Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who exercised veto powers within the bloc’s decision-making framework.
However, the French minister noted that Hungary’s position may be subject to change following a transition in government leadership, suggesting that the incoming administration could adopt a more flexible approach regarding EU foreign policy decisions.
